Home Tet 2000 About Tet Festival The Asian American Market The Organizer
Introduction The Tet Festival is organized annually in Southern California as the Vietnamese-American community celebrates Tet, the Lunar New Year. Tet, marking the beginning of Spring, is the most popular and single-most celebrated holiday of the year in many Asian cultures, particularly the Vietnamese and Chinese. It encompasses the tradition of Thanksgiving, the spirit of Christmas, and the excitement of the Western New Year. The Tet Festival is a long standing tradition for Asian communities worldwide and an eighteenth-year tradition for the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of Southern California (UVSA). Since its inception in 1982, the UVSA has recognized the cultural significance of Tet and has organized an annual celebration of Tet for Southern California. This year, as we ring in the Year of the Dragon in the city of Westminster, thousands are expected to attend the event. We invite you to participate as one of the generous sponsors in this festive occasion. Purpose
Past Attendance The Vietnamese-American community in Southern California has now grown to over 300,000 making it the largest population of Vietnamese outside of Vietnam. Since the festival began in 1982, attendance has increased steadily from a few thousands to one hundred thousand people. During the 1995 Tet Festival, the Los Angeles Times reported an estimated 50,000 attendees on Saturday alone.
